Hundreds of flights are canceled in the Northeast USA due to a winter storm

Tuesday promises to be a travel nightmare at the Northeast’s airports because of winter weather. As much as eight inches of snow could fall in New York City, and Boston could get a foot or more.

By 6:00 a.m. ET Tuesday, airlines had canceled more than 1,011 flights. With 156 cancellations, JetBlue makes up 19% of those.

Hundreds of flights

Airlines issued waivers ahead of the storm to give travelers extra flexibility. Monitor your flight status and consider changing your plans if you’re flying from, to or through the Northeast on Tuesday.

It can sometimes take airlines extra time to get all their operational pieces back in place after heavy weather clears out, so Wednesday could also be a hazy day to fly.

Here are the airlines that offer waivers.

  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • JetBlue Airlines
  • Spirit Airlines

Flight cancellations and delays: what you’re owed

Even if you bought a nonrefundable ticket, if your flight is canceled, you’re entitled to a full refund to your payment method.

The rules around flight delays are a little murky. However, the Department of Transportation’s consumer travel dashboard outlines what airlines have committed to do to compensate delayed passengers, from food vouchers to future travel credits.
